Greetings to you!ย You have stumbled into the right place stranger. Heed these words carefully, and we shall see if you have what it takes to brave the Road of Application. Skip the details below at your own peril, adventurer.

This is your chance to work with the next generation web-based simulation game for business courses in higher education (mouthful)!ย ย

For a decade we have toiled alone, and finally the time to expand has come. A position has opened up in our exclusive developer ensemble, just for you! As the third musketeer, youโ€™ll be adding a whopping 50% coding power to our capacity of 2, which entails both great power and great responsibility. We hope you genuinely enjoy delivering awesome solutions and iterating on them, with strong ownership over features, in collaboration with fantastic co-workers (promise), because thatโ€™s what youโ€™ll do here.ย

While we are a small dev team, we have good backing from the product team and a wider ecosystem of experts in everything from accessibility to security and design at Sage (our parent company), as well as strong support and sales teams. Down the road we will also continue to expand the dev team.ย

Our stack is React + Meteor/Node, (mostly) all Typescript, running on AWS, with Cypress tests. Weโ€™re Linux people, but you can be of a different persuasion if you have a good argument for it. We are pragmatic when it comes to development, meaning we want the minimum viable process that everyone is happy with, without needing to label it strictly. Letโ€™s dispense with the buzzwords and do good, reliable work.ย

ย

Responsibilitiesย

  • Full stack development on the simulation platform, in feature / simulation development and bug fixing. Weโ€™ll see what areas you like and have you work on that. Examples include:ย

  • New business simulations in related fieldsย

  • Existing game features and balanceย

  • Exercise and event framework to enhance learning and engagementย

  • Back end to improve performance and stabilityย

  • Integrations to learning management systems or the sales teamย

  • Write end-to-end tests for features you make, and unit-tests where they are necessary.ย

  • 3rd level technical support when one of us has done something terribly wrong.ย

  • Review PRs from the team, to keep us in lineย

ย

Qualificationsย

  • 5+ years background in programmingย

  • Strong working knowledge of Node/JS/TS/Meteor/React, but a quick study can make up the difference if you know other, related technologies/frameworks.ย

  • Strong interest in, or knowledge of, business/finance/marketing subjects? Youโ€™re on our shortlist.ย

  • Loves working collaboratively, receiving and giving constructive feedback.ย

  • Nerdย

  • A degree in computer science or equivalent is not necessary, but nice of course.ย ย

  • Works and thinks independently but communicates and asks when problems and questions arise.ย ย

  • Sees the business and customer value in the work you do.ย ย

  • Sense of humor, at least 15 years of experience with this.ย

  • Reads this carefully and painstakingly crafted job description and provides a relevant cover letter that demonstrates this.ย

Benefits and Perks for employees

  • Free accounting books! Hoorayย

  • Remote! With the option of going to the office if you live close to one of our officesย

  • Julebord in Norway once a year (look it up!)ย

  • 25 days holiday excluding bank holidays full-time/pro-rated for part-time rolesย

  • 2 additional โ€™floating daysโ€™ of personal leave, in recognition that each of us has cultural, religious, or family commitments that fall at times when the company is not closed.ย

  • Life assuranceย

  • Pensionย

  • Income protectionย

  • Tuition scheme and support for pursuing professional qualificationsย

  • Home working allowanceย

  • Travel Insuranceย

  • Healthy lifestyle reimbursementย

  • Access to the company doctor (UK)ย

  • Access to Company loans (season ticket loan, rental deposit loan, cycle loan)ย

  • Benefits can vary depending on your location and working arrangement. ย

Locationย

We have offices in Oslo and London, but remote is fine if youโ€™re in the EU or Eastern US time zones.ย

Equal Opportunity

We are an equal opportunity employer and do not discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. Youโ€™ve heard all this before right, but we actually mean it.ย
ย

About the company, Hubro Education / Sage publishingย

Hubro Education is based in Norway and has been making simulation games for business and marketing education for 10 years. were recently acquired by Sage Publishing, so we could reach a worldwide audience of college- and university level students in business courses.ย  We deliver the best solutions (won prizes actually) for fun, interactive learning to a field that is not known for being either.ย ย

Founded in 1965, Sage Publishing is a global academic publisher dedicated to disseminating high-quality, accessible knowledge. With a focus on social sciences, Sage provides a range of publications including scholarly journals, books, and electronic media. Sage Publishing operates as an independent, privately-owned company. Being privately held allows Sage to maintain a steadfast focus on its mission and values, providing a stable platform for producing and distributing scholarly work without the pressures typically associated with publicly traded companies.ย

ย
I'll only be reading the applications with interesting cover letters, but I will read them carefully.ย

In the cover letter, please answer the following:ย

Why did you apply to this job?ย

What is your relationship with games / gaming?ย

What do you think of the domain we work in?ย

Why are you a good fit with us?ย

What do you look forward to in this job?ย

ย Hope to hear from you!ย

๐Ÿ‘‰ Please reference you found the job on Remote OK, this helps us get more companies to post here, thanks!

When applying for jobs, you should NEVER have to pay to apply. You should also NEVER have to pay to buy equipment which they then pay you back for later. Also never pay for trainings you have to do. Those are scams! NEVER PAY FOR ANYTHING! Posts that link to pages with "how to work online" are also scams. Don't use them or pay for them. Also always verify you're actually talking to the company in the job post and not an imposter. A good idea is to check the domain name for the site/email and see if it's the actual company's main domain name. Scams in remote work are rampant, be careful! Read more to avoid scams. When clicking on the button to apply above, you will leave Remote OK and go to the job application page for that company outside this site. Remote OK accepts no liability or responsibility as a consequence of any reliance upon information on there (external sites) or here.

Job Descriptionย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย ย

We are seeking a Full Stack Python Web Developer to join our team and expand our capacity to meet the demands of our growing client base. In this role, you will manage a key piece of Open Architectsโ€™ productโ€” the Partner Portal.

ย

Open Architects (OA) is a Massachusetts-based organization that supports school districts, municipalities, state agencies, and education non-profits by providing custom-built visualization dashboards, data tools, and maps to give leaders the information they need to make data-informed decisions.

ย

We believe that high-quality systems and effective use of data are critical foundations that enable excellent schools and municipalities. OAโ€™s data tools seamlessly collect, combine, transform, analyze, and display data from disparate data sources to provide insights to school leaders. Staffed by former practitioners, OA creates the analytical tools and provides the insights that we wish we had when we worked in districts and municipalities.

ย

Now in our seventh year of operation, OA provides an open, collaborative team environment, where diverse perspectives and backgrounds are valued. We are driven by a deep sense of service to our clients and the students and communities they serve, and eagerly get into the trenches to help solve our clientsโ€™ problems. We are also a learning organization that embraces the messiness of the work and has fun along the way.ย  We take our work seriously but not ourselves.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

As part of a dynamic, growing startup, you will report to OAโ€™s Director of Technology, work closely with the product innovation team, and serve as the lead developer for OAโ€™s Partner Portal. We work remotely and maintain a strong team culture through daily meetings, quarterly step-backs, and an annual in-person retreat.

ย

Our ideal candidate is an experienced full-stack developer with a history of building, maintaining, and extending web applications. The right individual should have a meticulous approach to writing quality code and following best practices; enjoy the challenge of finding the best way to implement new features; have an eye for user experience; and view security with utmost importance.

ย

You will refactor and reengineer portions of our Partner Portal to realign with growth in product and scope, work with the product innovation team to add new features and enhancements, and continually optimize the full stack to improve user experience and product functionality.

ย

Our Partner Portal is the entry point for all OA products and services; this role provides the candidate with an opportunity to shape and impact the growth of an EdTech startup.

Why we are not the usual veterinary?

Filu (https://www.filu.vet) is on a mission to make European veterinary care more modern, personalized and convenient - we're building the future of veterinary care to provide better healthcare for pets as well as a better journey for pet-parents and vets.

We are developing the next generation of veterinary practices from the ground up while leveraging technology - all built in-house, so that we can innovate and improve continously the processes for the veterinary team, pet, and client experience. To do so, we're looking for a Full-Stack Lead Engineer to join our team.

We are based in in Berlin - the role can be remote or in-person and reports directly to our Co-Founder. You will work closely with the leadership team to shape our product strategy.

This is the role for you, if you love animals, enjoy working in small teams, and implementing new ideas! This is a unique opportunity to build a company from scratch and redefine the veterinary industry.

The Stack

  • Frontend: React & React Native
  • Backend: Preferably Node.js, but we are open to suggestions from candidates

What do you own?

  • Build the customer-facing software of Filu: mobile app for pet-owners and web interface for veterinarians
  • Integrate and connect third party tools (such as practice management software and communication software) to our proprietary customer-facing software

If we could bake you, you bring the following:

  • 4+ years of experience or an outstanding portfolio and educational background
  • Experience in building sustainable, maintainable, and extensible software & mobile apps
  • Track-record in writing clean, readable code and unit tests (examples of works such as a portfolio on GitHub is a strong plus)
  • You have experience integrating complex third party APIs
  • Desire to take ownership over what you build - ie. no fear of doing more than just sitting behind the code
  • Experience in team-collaboration on large-scale projects
  • Have a positive attitude and a sense of humor as well as love fun at work

What you will experience:

THE HERD

  • A sympathetic and value-driven founding team that wants to redefine veterinary medicine together with you
  • Inclusive cooperation - We are a herd that stands together and not a pack with one leader
  • A collegial family of people who live our core values and have your back

IMPACT

  • Unique opportunity to build a company from scratch and redefine the veterinary industry
  • The opportunity to make a real impact on the people around you
  • Empowerment to bring in your ideas and proposals

FLEXIBILITY

  • Flexible working models (including remote options)
  • Automony and freedom in your daily work
  • Bring your pet into our paw-proofed office and enjoy free vet care

GRATITUDE

  • Parent-friendly corporate culture, as well as sufficient holiday and other benefits (e.g., physical & mental wellbeing) are a matter of course for us
  • Salary range USD 80-110k
  • Opportunity for virtual equity shares

* Full-time permanent role\n* Work remotely or relocate and be based out of Sydney, Australia\n* Visa and relocation support available (subject to conditions) \n* Different salary ranges for relocating employees\n* You will need to work 9 - 1pm AEST / AEDT, flexible on your other 4 hours per day\n* Simple hiring process: 3 interviews + code exercise\n\nWrite code day-to-day and up skill those around you.\n\nDo you enjoy coaching others and working with colleagues who help each other develop their skills every day? We partner with our clients to deliver projects and new product features every day, whilst helping to develop the skills, knowledge and capability of those around us in the team. You'll have the opportunity to work in Product Development teams in different domains, both greenfield products as well as evolving existing ones.\n\nWhy are we looking for polyglot developers? Well, we know everyone has their favourite language or framework, but we also know that itโ€™s important to use the right tool/language/framework for the job at hand, and that a pragmatic approach might mean using a language that is already in production. Also, polyglot and/or agnostic developers tend to focus on core software engineering principles and practices, rather than what is shiny in a new framework or language. So whilst we usually work with JavaScript it doesnโ€™t mean we arenโ€™t able to transfer our engineering skills and work with other languages when it makes sense.\n\nThrough regular Learning Lunches, Technical Brown Bags, Software Crafters Meetups, Start of Week meetings, Team Offsites and other social and community events, our team learns and collaborates together and is always sharing knowledge and helping each other, both within Pragmateam, clients and the community.\n\nTo be successful in this role you must have an open mind to sometimes work with a language that is not your usual one and most likely consider yourself a polyglot, ie. someone who is happy to learn new languages or further develop their skills if needed for the task at hand. You must also love developing the skills of other software engineers and helping them improve their craft and capability. The ability and passion to coach others and make things a little bit better is part of the job, so having the empathy and soft skills to do it is important.\n\n**Why it's goodโ€ฆ**\n\n* Opportunity to work across a variety of domains, with different problem spaces and technologies.\n* Able to share your knowledge and develop the skills of those around you, whilst writing code and learning every day.\n* Be a member of a cross-functional agile team delivering together end-to-end.\n* Working in a stable product team (ie. we don't like pure project work) provides a lot of job satisfaction as you are an integral part of the product development process.\n* We work in clients employing continuous delivery practices such as CI, automated testing and continuous deployment.\n* We prefer to work for medium or small product companies instead of large enterprises, as it's easier to be set up for success, have a positive impact and influence.\n* We choose our work and often say no, so people like the work that we do around here.\n* Education & Work From Home budget of $4,000 that you manage yourself: decide if you want to go to a conference, spend it all on books or dedicate yourself to an online training course, all while having a professional, productive and comfortable setup for when you're WFH\n* The 'team' in 'Pragmateam' does mean something: we are never by ourselves in clients so that we can support each other and deliver together.\n* We are curious and have a culture of continuous improvement so we are always keen to learn more and improve ourselves and Pragmateam.\n\n\n**To be successful in the role youโ€™ll have the following skills:**\n\n* Extensive commercial experience (usually 6+ years) in developing custom built web applications, ideally having worked with JavaScript and some of the usual (or unusual) Javascript frameworks such as React, Angular, VueJS. On the back-end you might have worked witih node.js, .Net, Go or Kotlin to name a few.\n* Solid experience working in teams that use XP practices (eg. CI, TDD, pairing, small releases).\n* Support and coach others as well as help teams improve and develop their capabilities, through pairing, Coding Dojos, Dev Guilds, Brown Bags, mentoring, influencing, 1-on-1's etc.\n* Experience across the full tech stack with an interest in developing software both backend and front end (a bias to one side is normal and totally fine).\n* Experience with TDD and the benefits of writing tests first before starting on your code.\n* Solid experience refactoring code, ability to describe different refactoring techniques.\n* Experience with Object Oriented programming and able to discuss design patterns.\n* Passion for writing Clean Code, so everyone in the team can understand it.\n* Awareness of distributed architectures and micro-services and interest to learn more.\n\n**Our Recruitment Process**\n\n* Phone interview (30-60 minutes)\n* Test Coverage exercise (2-3 hours)\n* Pairing + Tech Interview (45-90 minutes)\n* Management Interview (60 minutes)\n\n\nInterested? Apply below or you take a look further at Pragmateam here: https://pragma.team/\n\n**About Pragmateam**\n\nWhy not join Pragmateam and be part of a product delivery company with a rich and supportive culture, centred on learning? Through regular Learning Lunches, Technical Brown Bags, Software Crafters Meetups, Start of Week meetings, and other social and community events, our team learns and collaborates together and is always sharing knowledge and helping each other, both within Pragmateam, clients and the community.\n\n**Benefits:**\n\n* Work visits to Australia to work with the team\n* 20 days annual leave, 10 days sick / carers leave\n* Individual Learning & Development budget\n* Work From Home support budget\n* Fortnightly Learning Lunch\n* Fortnightly Technical Brown Bag lunch\n* PragmaThanks recognition program\n* Fun and casual company environment\n* Great work/life balance \n\nPlease mention the word **PAINLESS** when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMTguOTcuMTQuOTA=). #### Our Mission:\n\nLarge marketplaces like Amazon have trained us to expect products delivered to our doorsteps within 1-2 days at no extra cost. As a result, millions of sellers on other marketplaces are falling behind, unable to cost-effectively deliver products to their customers. Our mission is to transform the $8-12 trillion per year fragmented and outdated logistics industry, and build an intelligent, asset-lite network that enables any online seller to offer fast, affordable fulfillment.\n\n#### Our Team:\n\nHow we arrived at Deliverr is different โ€” we are violinists, economists, ex-consultants, journalists, and more. What unites us together is the Deliverr factor: a bias for action, curiosity, and entrepreneurial ownership. We're looking for intelligent, driven, and passionate people to help make our vision a reality. Weโ€™re based in the heart of San Francisco and building teams around the globe โ€” backed by leading Silicon Valley venture capital firms. If you are excited about joining a people-first company that is driven to power the future of online retail, โ€” we're looking for you. Are you ready?\n\n#### What you'll do\n\n- Reinvent fulfillment by designing, developing, testing, deploying, maintaining and improving pragmatic software\n- Manage individual project priorities, deadlines and deliverables.\n- Be a full business owner: shape the foundation of the product and business that you work on.\n- Actively learn new language, techniques, and methodologies.\n- Contribute actively to code reviews and design reviews.\n- Create visibility for stakeholders through business intelligence tooling\n\n#### What weโ€™re looking for\n\n- BS degree in Computer Science, similar technical field of study or equivalent practical experience.\n- Insatiable Curiosity, Undying Passion and Ownership to take on hard real world problems.\n- Extensive Javascript experience, familiarity with React.\n- Someone who follows TDD or in general likes to write tests.\n- Experience shipping production code with full instrumentation: deployment, logging, and monitoring and documentation.\n- Excellent communication skills in verbal and written English.\n- Relational database experience. Understanding of transactions and ACID properties.\n- Comfort working across the front-end and back-end, and the interfaces between them\n\nBonus Points for\n\n- Masterโ€™s, PhD degree, further education or experience in engineering, computer science or other technical related field.\n- Prior experience in Supply Chain, Fulfillment, Logistics, Shipping and Warehouse technologies.\n- Machine learning, operations research and optimization, developing large software systems, logistics & fulfillment industry, pricing algorithms, shipping technology.\n- Rich github, hackathon accolades or other ways you can show that you love to code\n- Knowledge of Typescript or ES6.\n- Experience with SQS or other queueing services. What do we do?\n\nHatchways' mission is bold. We're modernizing education by helping those new to the tech industry get real, practical experience on-the-job instead of in the classroom. Our goal is to provide access to opportunities to people who otherwise would have been overlooked by the traditional interview process.\n\n\nWe have revolutionized the technical interview process by using a practical work simulation to assess candidates instead of relying on credentials, years of experience, or impractical CS knowledge to assess candidates.\n\n\nHatchways is a place you come to make an impact, working with like-minded people to build something meaningful using the best technology. You can read more about our team and culture here - https://hatchways.io/careers.\n\n\nWhat we are looking for?\n\nWe are adding a Senior Full-stack Engineer to the team. As a member of the team, you will get a chance to develop complex web applications, using a mix of Javascript (React) and Python. You will be working in a highly collaborative environment. This is an exciting role for someone who enjoys the challenge and responsibility for large projects.\n\n\nWhat does senior mean? For us, we are a company that doesnโ€™t hire based on years of experience or credentials. In order to be senior, we are looking for an engineer that can provide technical mentorship to our team and can work on complex technical projects with little to no direction.\n\n\nThe ideal candidate for this position is a thoughtful problem solver who can easily adapt to changing requirements and quickly learn new technologies. They are passionate about developing modern, cutting-edge web applications, and can balance empathy to end-users with technical requirements.\n\n\nWhat you hopefully bring:\n\nExperience with a modern front-end framework (React, Angular, Vue, Ember, Typescript) and back-end framework (Python, Rails, Node.js)\nOur stack is React, Python/Flask, GCP\nExperience with non-relational or relational databases such as MongoDB, MySQL, Postgres, Redis, Cassandra\nExperience working with IaaS such as GCP or AWS\nExperience giving feedback on others' code through code reviews\n\nAbout you:\n\nA positive attitude, motivated, and a fast learner\nYou love teamwork and find it easy to collaborate closely with the engineering team to solve complex problems in efficient and scalable ways\nYou have a passion for solving problems across all areas of the business\nExcited with the opportunity to lead a small team!\n\nInterview process:\n\nA 30-minute phone call with our CTO (https://www.linkedin.com/in/shumskassam/)\nA project-based assessment where you will work on a few issues on a Github repository - it will be very practical and done using React + Python\nA final 30-minute culture fit call with our CEO (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jaclynling/)\n\nWhat are the perks and benefits?\n\nWe are a flexible, diverse, and remote-friendly team. We prioritize learning and growth opportunities for our developers (not only technically, but also personally) through frequent 1:1 meetings with your managers, valuable quarterly reviews, and external training opportunities. We are an early-stage startup, so joining us early means you will have a significant stake in the company. We also have a very flexible vacation and health benefits plan.\n\n\nLearn a little more about the founding team:\n\nHatchways is a Y Combinator-backed startup (S19) and is founded by two-time founders Jaclyn and Shums. Prior to starting Hatchways, Jaclyn and Shums started their first startup (Blynk, your personal stylist in your pocket) which got acquired by Kik (popular messenger app in Waterloo, ON). At Kik, Shums was an engineering manager and Jaclyn led product for the bots team. Together, they launched some of the first chatbots in the market with partners like H&M, Sephora, and Shopify. Shortly thereafter, they wanted to pursue a problem area they were passionate about: improving the education to employment pathways so more people have access to opportunities in tech.\n\n\nHatchways is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. If there is any part of the interview process that is not accommodating for your situation, we are more than happy to create a more comfortable process for you. Just let us know by emailing us at [email protected]. \n\nPlease mention the words **GLARE POET LIBRARY** when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMTguOTcuMTQuOTA=).
