Remote Elections News Apps Developer Temporary

\nPlease submit a cover letter, your resume, portfolio and (if applicable) GitHub profile.\n\nNPRโ€™s News Apps/graphics team is looking for a civic-minded developer to join us to cover the 2024 elections. Our team works on data visualizations, information design, creative story presentations and custom tooling to help tell stories in the NPR newsroom. (You can see some of our past work on our team blog and GitHub sites.) This is a temporary position, starting as soon as possible and running through the end of 2024, and can be based at our Washington, D.C., headquarters or at a remote location in the U.S. approved by NPR.\n\nIn this role, you will have the opportunity to help our audience make sense of the elections, including key issues, results and analysis. Your biggest responsibilities will be to help design and build our results infrastructure for primary season and the general election, and to work on related stories and analysis. You will be assigned other projects as bandwidth permits.\n\nOn this team, you will have to work quickly in a dynamic environment. Members of our team wear many hats โ€” designer, reporter, data wrangler, developer, cartographer, sysadmin, etc. Depending on your experience and the teamโ€™s needs, youโ€™ll also utilize different skills day-to-day. And youโ€™ll work closely with various journalists and storytelling units around the NPR organization and across our network of member stations, including photographers and video journalists, beat reporters and show producers, copy editors, digital editors and engagement editors.\n\nThis is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.\n\nRESPONSIBILITIES\n\n\n* Set up and test our election results data pipeline (using data from the AP elections API and other sources) for primary elections and the November general election\n\n* Build user-facing election results displays for use on NPR.org and member station websites\n\n* Translate editorial goals into sustainable applications and infrastructure.\n\n* Work closely with individual story producers, editors and teammates to identify opportunities for visual storytelling, data visualization and/or analysis\n\n* Assess what work realistically can be executed in the time available and meet agreed-upon deadlines\n\n* Document your work for teammates, newsroom colleagues and/or external audiences, as relevant\n\n* Coach other team members, articulating story, design and code suggestions in a helpful and supportive way\n\n* Maintain and extend the teamโ€™s technical infrastructure and development best practices\n\n\n\n\nThe above duties and responsibilities are not an exhaustive list of required responsibilities, duties and skills. Other duties may be assigned, and this job description can be modified at any time.\n\nMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS\n\nThree or more years of experience developing for the web in a news, civic or data-related context\n\nEDUCATION REQUIREMENT\n\nBachelorโ€™s degree or equivalent work experience.\n\nWORK LOCATION\n\nRemote Permitted: This is a remote permitted role. This role is based out of our Washington, DC office but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves.\n\nREQUIRED SKILLS\n\n\n* Experience designing interactive or data-heavy projects with a static architecture\n\n* Experience with setting up servers, crons and server-side data processing workflows\n\n* Solid news judgment. You can think of software in terms of the information needs of the audience\n\n* Fluency in JavaScript, HTML5 and CSS3, including responsive web design techniques.\n\n* Proven success implementing complex designs in HTML/CSS\n\n* Experience developing software projects using the Git version control system\n\n* Cultivate and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace\n\n* Cultivate and support an inclusive and equitable workplace culture\n\n\n\n\nPREFERRED SKILLS\n\n\n* Experience with the AP elections API\n\n* Experience with Node, EJS and other elements of our technology stack.\n\n* Familiarity with Amazon Web Services and provisioning AWS resources using the console, CLI and API\n\n* Experience working iteratively and collaboratively (for example, using Agile or a similar project management process).\n\n* Experience using web components, including custom elements and shadow DOM, or other JavaScript component frameworks (such as React or Vue).\n\n* Experience with GIS/mapping software such as QGIS, Leaflet, topojson, mapshaper, or ESRI.\n\n* Familiarity with data analysis techniques, especially in command-line or scriptable environments like Jupyter Notebook, Pandas or numpy.\n\n\n\n\nJOB TYPE\n\nThis is a temporary full time position.\n\nCOMPENSATION\n\nHourly Rate: The U.S. based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is $46.87-57.69 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum hourly rate NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.\n\nBenefits: NPR offers access to comprehensive benefits for employees and dependents. Octopus Energy is hiring a
Remote Senior Backend Developer Supportsite Team

\nKraken is the technology tentacle of the Octopus Energy Group. \n\n\nAll technology is written and maintained by a multi-discipline engineering team of around 300 people globally. Our engineers work in โ€˜super teamsโ€™ which are focused on key areas of our platform as well as other innovative products. This also includes server-side, client-side and mobile engineers working closely with UX experts, copywriters and designers. \n \nTeams are empowered to choose a way of working that works for them, often opting for a Kanban-like approach. Notion and Asana are then used to specify and manage work; Github, CircleCI and Terraform Enterprise as part of an immutable-infrastructure, continuous delivery pipeline; and Datadog, Sentry and Cloudwatch to measure performance and monitor production. \n \nSome of our coding conventions are open-source . \n \nKraken is a great place to learn, work with some talented engineers and level-up your skills.  \n \nOur technology\nOn the server-side, we mainly use Python. Most of our websites are powered by Django, Django-REST-framework and GraphQL (Graphene).  \n \nWe use AWS heavily  as part of a continuous deployment pipeline. See, for example, Django, ELB health checks and continuous delivery. \n \nClient-side, we use React, htmx and SASS; our mobile apps are built using native code or React Native.\n\n\nOur team\nOur teamโ€™s goal is to make Kraken as awesome as the Energy Specialists who use it every day. We work closely with them and our in-house designers to keep making it better and better. Beyond that, our work empowers Krakenโ€™s many backend teams to build amazing features without having to worry about CSS and JavaScript getting in their way. We do this by building our own design system, working with other teams on building new features, and ensuring Kraken is a joy to work on. All while adding new features and maintaining existing functionality.\n\n\nWeโ€™re looking for a strong backend developer with a solid understanding of Django, to help us become even more of a full-stack powerhouse.\n\n\nSo, would you like to work in a team that gets the opportunity to collaborate with others, and dip into many domains? Would you like to help shape the experience of Energy Specialists using Kraken? Would you like to help come up with the best patterns to build an awesome website, from Django templates, to React, to HTMX? Would you like to mentor Frontend devs who want to build out their skills and go full-stack, while learning a few Frontend tricks from them? Give us a shout.\n\n\n\nWhat you'll do\n* We have lots of difficult design challenges to solve. The UK utilities market is complicated, outdated and process-heavy - there's an awful lot of domain modelling that we need to get right. Strong attention to detail is essential.\n* We have challenging technical problems to solve; like processing tens of millions of meter readings a day. We need the right technology in place to handle this smoothly as well as feeding data into a machine learning pipeline that models and predicts consumption. Or thinking about how we adapt Kraken to improve other utilities like water and broadband.\n* There's a great opportunity for disruption in the UK energy market. The big suppliers still dominate, but are not exactly popular. The energy landscape is changing as we move to more dis-aggregated forms of generation, with less predictability, more dynamism and smarter technology.\n* You'll be working for a company thatโ€™s fighting climate change. Our generation arm is the largest investor in solar generation in the UK, and is funding wind and anaerobic digestion. As a supplier, we're helping people to use greener technology and renewable energy, all helping move the UK towards a lower carbon future.\n\n\n\nWhat you'll need\n* We're looking for someone with a general interest in technology and problem-solving; someone diligent and thoughtful. It would be helpful to have experience/expertise in the following (in rough priority order):\n* Python\n* Django (or equiv. web framework)\n* Domain modelling\n* HTTP and REST APIs\n* Writing robust and fault-tolerant software\n* Celery and async processing\n* Postgres\n\nPlus experience in the following would be a bonus:\n* AWS\n* Terraform, Packer, Consul\n* React and Redux\n\n\n\nWhy else you'll love about us\n* Wondering what the salary for this role is? Just ask us! On a call with one of our recruiters it's something we always cover as we genuinely want to match your experience with the correct salary. The reason why we don't advertise is because we honestly have a degree of flexibility and would never want salary to be a reason why someone doesn't apply to Octopus - what's more important to us is finding the right octofit!\n* Octopus Energy is a unique culture. An organisation where people learn, decide, and build quicker. Where people work with autonomy, alongside a wide range of amazing co-owners, on projects that break new ground. We want your hard work to be rewarded with perks you actually care about! We won best company to work for in 2022, on Glassdoor we we're voted 50 best places to work in 2022 and our Group CEO, Greg has recorded a podcast about our culture and how we empower our people \n* Visit our perks hub - Octopus Employee Benefits\n\n\n\n\n\nWe would prefer someone who can work in our London office but will consider remote candidates. However, you do need to be able to work in the UK. \n\n\nWe're very excited to be growing our team. We're looking for skills and experience to help shape and define the future of not only our team, but the wider business at a global scale. If you're reading this and grinning, please apply! There are huge challenges to tackle, and we need amazing people who are keen to get stuck in.\n\n\nIf this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you. \n\n\nStudies have shown that some groups of people, like women, are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet 100% of the job requirements. Whoever you are, if you like one of our jobs, we encourage you to apply as you might just be the candidate we hire. Across Octopus, we're looking for genuinely decent people who are honest and empathetic. Our people are our strongest asset and the unique skills and perspectives people bring to the team are the driving force of our success. As an equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected attribute. Our commitment is to provide equal opportunities, an inclusive work environment, and fairness for everyone.\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n No salary data published by company so we estimated salary based on similar jobs related to Design, React, GraphQL, Django, JavaScript, CSS, Mobile, Senior and Backend jobs that are similar:\n\n $50,000 — $100,000/year\n
