Your Role
We’re seeking a dedicated candidate for a remote and full-time position. As a company, we value great design and code, and pay close attention to detail throughout the product development process. If you’re passionate about writing elegant, well-organized code, this may be the perfect opportunity for you.
You'll be working directly with our CTO to expand our capabilities, delivering faster and more efficient solutions to our clients. Apart from coding, you'll also engage in strategic discussions, contribute to architectural decision-making, and influence the roadmap of our product.
Your Responsibilities
Enhance our mission and expand our product's capabilities by developing new integrations with third-party services and APIs. This includes eCommerce platforms, Point-of-Sale (PoS) systems, CRMs, and more. Your contribution will be instrumental in broadening our product's scope and enriching our platform's connectivity options, directly impacting the way our clients do business.
Building new features and functionality for both the frontend and backend.
Optimize existing complex backend processing jobs when required.
Collaborate with the CTO in identifying parts of the system that need fixing and optimization.
Participate in building new app features and our new dashboard.
Assisting in scaling efforts by performing benchmarks and optimizations as needed, and proposing changes to architecture design.
Your Qualifications
You have experience building applications with Ruby and Rails, ideally in projects involving complex interactions with 3rd party APIs.
You possess a deep understanding of application integration, including studying and understanding integration tools' documentation, and transforming it into efficient code.
You have a good background in JavaScript and familiarity with Hotwire and other popular JavaScript frameworks such as React, Vue, etc.
Strong experience with PostgreSQL, including working with large databases, complex queries, and materialized views.
A formal Engineering or CS background is preferred, but not required. If not, the candidate should be able to explain how they have learned the fundamentals of CS.
Familiarity with design patterns, Domain-Driven Design (DDD), and algorithms.
A strong sense of aesthetics and product design, with the ability to improve flows and UI designs independently.
Familiarity with common stack tools and technologies such as Github, CI, RSpec, AWS, CSS/Sass/TailwindCSS.
You are humble and have excellent asynchronous communication skills. You are open to giving and receiving constructive criticism.
You possess strong written and verbal communication skills in English and can explain complex issues clearly. Knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese would be a plus.

We are a distributed global team comprising of the CEO, CTO, and a Sales Executive. You'll be our fourth addition, closely collaborating with the CTO and occasionally engaging with the rest of the team in meetings.

To continue our growth we’re seeking a Senior Backend Engineer located in London or Auckland. With your strong production experience of Python and ETL processes, you’ll play a key role in our data extraction, transformation pipelines, data storage (MongoDB), and data delivery via AWS API Gateway (Rest APIs) and AWS AppSync (GraphQL). You’ll need a deep understanding and experience with serverless AWS (Lamba with EventBridge), and knowledge of the serverless framework (https://www.serverless.com/) would be a significant benefit.

How We Work at Basket

We plan each cycle well ahead of time with team discussions, research and workshops to make sure we’re making informed decisions.
Here’s how our typical cycle looks;
2 weeks before a cycle we plan and define requirements for features
1 week before a cycle we do technical due diligence and write acceptance criteria
During a cycle we write code using test-driven development, test code to development and staging environments, collaborate with QA, Design and PM team members to ensure features are production ready.
What You'll Do
Write, improve and maintain serverless functions to accurately transform and load data into efficient and organised MongoDB storage
Develop and maintain 3rd party data clients to enrich stored data
Create and update API endpoints for a frontend client using AWS API Gateway (Rest APIs) and AWS AppSync (GraphQL)
Analyse and tune application performance with a focus on efficiency using analytics tools such as Lumigo, Sentry, Segment and DataDog
Research and architect solutions using serverless architecture patterns
Implement and improve analytics and application monitoring performance
Approach your work using test driven development (TDD) to ensure the integrity of your code and our services
About You
Native English (this is essential)
Located in London, UK or Auckland, NZ
5+ years full-time work experience as a backend engineer on production services
Advanced knowledge of Python ^3.10 and/or NodeJS ^15.0.0
Deep knowledge of webpage parsing, including XPath and Regex
Excellent experience with MongoDB and DynamoDB
Production experience with AWS services in a serverless microservices context, such as Lambda, AppSync, API Gateway, S3, SNS, SQS, Cognito, EventBridge
Lots of energy and enthusiasm about being part of a small, progressive team
Good To Have
University degree in computer science, or equivalent experience

What we’d want you to do:
Take technical ownership of our product’s architecture and capabilities
Recommend and lead complex refactoring projects and migrations, without sacrificing stability, such as:
Modernizing our back-end stack (we’re currently on Rails 4)
Optimizing our API and PostgreSQL database for scale and performance
Suggest and implement scalability & productivity improvements
Collaborate with the rest of the team in weekly meetings, chat and code reviews
Develop new full-stack features from start to finish using the Shape Up method
You’ll have opportunities to work on the entire stack, from databases to user interfaces and everything in between, in a wide variety of product areas.
You’ll own the delivery of high-impact projects that affect real customers, from start to finish, with no bureaucracy, following the Shape Up method.
