Our Backend and Data Engineering Team is a four-person team (soon to be six!) and is part of our Engineering & Data Group — a quirky, talented, and humble group of about twenty with diverse backgrounds ranging from journalism to academia to international industry.\n\nAbout Our Backend & Data Engineering Team\n\nThe Backend & Data Engineering Team builds software to collect, analyze, and report data about coffee farmers’ conditions and practices. This large-scale data-collection effort requires many moving parts to work together, and we use technology to support that effort at every step of the process — from identifying coffee farms in satellite imagery, to coordinating survey edits across country teams, to detecting data anomalies in real-time that can be investigated while teams are still in the field. A core part of our work is in data aggregation and report generation, with insights ultimately being shared with roasters and other stakeholders on how to assist in improving the social, economic, and environmental conditions of smallholder farmers. \n\nWhile our tooling varies across internal products, our backend services primarily use a Python/PostgreSQL stack running on Linux to run our GraphQL APIs. We use git and Github for maintaining our code, CircleCI for CI/CD, and AWS for hosting our services and static resources, with containerization where appropriate for development and deployment. We've begun working with Terraform.\n\nWhat You’ll Be Doing\n\nYou will contribute to major feature planning and development, both independently and in collaboration with your teammates.\n\n\n* Implement new features on our core platforms, Jebena and Sini. You’ll participate in long-term planning and product roadmaps, collaborate with product managers on writing specs for the team to implement, and develop features from specs. You should be comfortable collaborating with non-Engineering teams to understand their feature needs. Existing customers depend on you for sparring, for help with designing and building new services and learning about DevOps and Cloud Native concepts and best practices. Sales will rely on you to help out with finding the right path to a solution, to help make plans and to onboard new SaaS customers. The world will learn from you through workshops and other content.
Depending on your specific skills, expertise and growth ambitions, you will do any combination of the following (we'll figure that out with you):
Create Statements-of-Work and Prepare work backlogs for new projects
Do Proof-of-Concepts, research new platform features and explore exotic use cases for our Reference Solution
Design and shape our Reference Solution on a product management level
Create a roadmap for the team on both technical and strategic levels
Do developer-oriented Kubernetes Workshops, do sparring sessions with developers, guide and support workload migrations
Help debug non-urgent, complex workload issues, and respond to advanced support questions
Help in project planning and guarding technical context within projects
Perform cost optimisation reviews (AWS RI’s, savings plans, sizing and resources allocation, etc.) to maximise cost savings for our customers’ cloud resources
Act as a pre-sales engineer in commercial conversations with customers along with our sales team
Participate in the on-call rotation involving all technical team members. We rotate weekly with a primary-secondary rotation, addressing production issues and 24/7 escalations. At the moment this is organised in a team of 6 colleagues, thus requires you to be on-call 2 out of 6 weeks.
Skills and expertise
You have a consultative/guiding/curious nature

AWS experience is a requirement, Azure knowledge is a bonus
Kubernetes experience is a must, specifically conceptual understanding of Kubernetes, its use cases, and operating workloads on it
Experience in consulting or (solutions, application, cloud) architecting is a bonus
The more experience you have in any category that we are active in, the better. This is anything from DevOps practices, (SaaS) cloud and application architectures, containerisation, application and data migrations, etc
Having advanced knowledge in one or more of these areas: security, CI/CD, observability, DR/BC, FinOps, database performance optimisation is definitely a plus
Having an AWS certification, a CNCF certification or any other relevant Cloud/DevOps certification is a plus

Compensation and benefits

Qualifications

A robust background in JavaScript/TypeScript, with familiarity in Hotwire and other popular JavaScript frameworks like React.js and Vue.js.
Strong experience with PostgreSQL, including working with large databases, complex queries, and materialized views.
Experience with API design (REST, GraphQL) and software modeling including authentication and security.

We facilitate the creation and management of visits and streamline the association of key data with visits (such as the care needs of the client, billing and payment info, clock-in and clock-out times, and more). \n\nWe enable care operations by answering important questions like “which caregivers are available and qualified to work with this client?” and “what are the optimal caregiver assignments for a set of clients?”. Our team supports vertical user flows related to schedule and calendar management, as well as robust APIs to expose visit details, search visits and caregiver availability, and modify scheduled care.\n\nOur team partners closely with data science to enable system-optimized caregiver assignments at scale.\n\nWe have an exciting runway ahead of us. As Honor’s Care Platform grows quickly, building robust and scalable systems is critical.
