Iโm so, so excited to find a new role and company I love but before I start, Iโd like to be radically transparent to prospective employers, recruiters, and hiring managers by sharing the 5 conditions that I've learned to make #nonnegotiable in my professional life:
1) My mental health at work is nonnegotiable.
2) Respect from colleagues, peers and managers alike, is nonnegotiable.
3) A nurturing and supportive work environment? NONnegotiable.
4) A culture that cares about substance over style, seniority, title, or years of experience/education? You better believe thatโs nonnegotiable.
5) And lastly, a culture that encourages asking questions and does not interpret mere ignorance as an inherent lack of merit/skill/ability, is 100% nonnegotiable.
Throughout my working life these have always been the standards I believe should be met in any workplace. It can be so easy at times to relax your own standards and take the first offer you get in a world where most of us need to exchange labor for income just to sustain ourselves, let alone to experience abundance and thrive. It can be easy to let your mental health at work suffer for far too long for the same reason. I realize it takes a great deal of financial privilege to set the terms of your own labor. I acknowledge that the presence of children and/or other dependents (I have neither) can complicate career considerations further. However, if there are two things Iโve learned in nearly a decade of earning income (I turn 30 next week, WHAT?), theyโre that 1) if you donโt know what is nonnegotiable to you, you wonโt find whatโs right for you even if/when you have the means/time to do so and 2) pay and prestige are almost never sufficient factors for job satisfaction. It is possible to be satisfied and happy at lower paying jobs and demoralized at higher paying jobs. I will always be my own best advocate when it comes to compensation but I have also lived on minimum wage before and in the right circumstances, I am fully willing to cut back on my spending again in order to take a part-time position and/or a position with lower pay. Generous compensation is great but what matters even more to me is making sure my conditions for a happy, healthy work life are met. If not: Thank you, NEXT! Iโm happy to take more time and keep looking.
