Myself Ramya Lakshmanan, I have recently completed my Ph.D. research work on โ€œIdentifying sperm novel transcripts and RNA elements influencing semen quality and fertility in Murrah buffalo bullsโ€, where I developed a strong foundation in developing research methodologies, analysing the transcriptomic, proteomic data and interpreting the influence of transcripts, their isoforms and proteins on fertilization and early embryonic development process. I have also done integrated analysis of sperm proteomic data and transcriptomic data for understanding the association of candidate genes in influencing the function at the protein level. The genes and proteins were annotated using different online resources to understand the impact of these biomolecules on fertility traits and pregnancy outcomes

My research project involves combined De novo and reference-based transcriptome assembly of the sperm transcripts, identifying the novel transcripts and the RNA elements that influence the fertility rate. Sperm is a peculiar cell to undergo splicing very rapidly to generate more transcript isoforms and choose particular isoforms for particular functions. I have analysed the splicing variations in the sperm transcript data as well as in human samples

During my research journey, I was actively involved in various research projects, both as an individual researcher and as a part of the interdisciplinary teams. While I was doing my Ph.D., I was also working as a Research Associate in the project titled โ€œDevelopment of buffalo bull fertility diagnostic chip based on sperm transcripts signaturesโ€ and developed a gene-expression based microarray chip from the sperm transcriptome data generated through Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). I am an enthusiastic researcher to always go beyond the project mandates. For instance, in a project that focused on identifying gene markers for fertility traits, I went the extra mile and built a sperm transcriptome database by completing both De novo and reference-based transcriptome assembly. The development of this database is an additional creative product that resulted from our labโ€™s efforts.

Through these experiences, I have honed my abilities to effectively formulate research questions, design experiments, collect and analyze data, and interpret results. My strong analytical and problem-solving skills, coupled with attention to detail, allow me to delve into complex research problems and derive meaningful insights. Furthermore, I have gained proficiency in using important bioinformatics software for the genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomic data analysis of human, animal as well as plant samples. My proficiency in programming languages such as Python and R has helped me analyze large datasets and develop pipelines for analyzing the sperm omics data.

Prior to joining my Ph.D, I worked as a scientist and led the variant and transcriptome analysis team at an NGS-based service company. During my tenure, I have completed over 200 omics projects demonstrating my expertise in the field. I have also excelled as a team player, fostering a collaborative environment and mentoring five junior analysts in the analysis of omic data. My approach to work is both friendly and result-oriented. I believe in setting a positive example by consistently meeting deadlines while maintaining a cordial atmosphere. Drawing from my experience, my skill set will help me to effectively supervise undergraduate and master projects and co-supervise the Ph.D. students. I always get excited about designing a project, devising methodology and interpret the research findings to address the research questions. Furthermore, I have assisted numerous clients in getting their research work published in reputed international journals.

Throughout my career, I have consistently been recognized as the go-to person for bioinformatics expertise. I held the sole bioinformatician position within my institute, where I actively engage in project discussions with numerous research groups for devising robust methodologies for data analysis, assisting in data interpretation, and generating high-quality graphs and plots for research publications. As a result of these collaborations, I have co-authored 11 articles alongside esteemed researchers. Furthermore, I have gained valuable experience in compiling comprehensive annual reports for projects over the past five years. This responsibility has honed my skills in effectively summarizing complex information and presenting it in a concise and meaningful manner. My contributions within these various teams and my extensive publication record demonstrate my ability to excel in multidisciplinary environments and my commitment to advancing scientific knowledge in the field of bioinformatics.

In addition to my technical skills, I have a strong track record of effectively communicating research findings to diverse audiences. I have had the privilege of presenting my research work at national and international conferences, where I successfully conveyed my research findings and won the Best Young Scientist award twice. Further, my research writing skills have been recognized through my achievement in the AWSAR (Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research) research writing competition conducted by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Out of the numerous entries, I was honoured to be selected as one of the best 100 stories. This recognition highlights my ability in articulating complex research concepts and findings in a compelling manner. I am excited to leverage my strong communication skills to contribute effectively to your research project. Whether it involves presenting findings, writing reports, or collaborating with peers, I am confident in my ability to deliver clear and impactful communication that enhances the success of the project.
