I am an engineer, a climate change researcher, an educator and a learning specialist. At my core, I am a collector of knowledge. I like to learn and to provide learning opportunities to others. I believe that change is fundamental to survival and I thoroughly subscribe to the idea of change being the only constant in the universe.
I am from the South Pacific, my ancestors were indentured laborer's under colonial Britain who were brought to Fiji from India in the late 1800s. I draw my roots from my Indo heritage and from being a Pacific Islander.
I have been a Radio Frequency and Satellite engineer for a telecommunications company that serves 5 countries in the Pacific, I have worked in Nauru, Vanuatu and Fiji in this capacity and I have had opportunities to mingle with these cultures and interact with individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds. I have been an Instructor for the national TVET institute in Fiji where I led the school of electrical and electronics engineering on a remote campus. I have encountered student from a plethora of learning backgrounds, students who are struggling with numeracy and literacy, those who have never been to school but are experienced professionals, those who are older than my parents, and those who do not share a native language with me. I have worked for a national television company as broadcast engineer, where I have worked with audio visual equipment, maintained broadcasting equipment in remote hilltops, and have bathed myself in the world of entertainment and media.
I am currently a learning specialist in numeracy at a regional university that serves 14 island countries in the Pacific. I devise and construct strategies to help students learn better and have a more enjoyable experience at the university. I am well-versed with digital tools that make student learning easier, especially if the student and the teacher are geographically separated. To make students more numerate, I work on training peers who can guide students, I make videos that allow students to follow numerical concepts at their own pace, and I prepare performance reports to justify interventions and to identify students who might need help.
I am trained on how to write technical reports and I have written several documents and proposals with diligent referencing.
As is evident, I love to learn and I would love to learn and work with whoever is willing to do the same.
