Learning is the most important thing in my life. I would be a vastly different person if it were not for the knowledge passed down from my mentors, the experiences I have pursued, and the environments Iโ€™ve been surrounded by. Learning through experience is something I have not only enjoyed greatly but found that it consistently challenges my worldview and leaves a positive impact on me. A great example of this is my time with The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. I learned early on the importance of persistence and hard work with my process auditioning. Throughout my time with the organization, I was given the opportunity to serve in leadership positions which taught me a variety of things, including how to lead with empathy, how to become an effective mentor, how to lead through service, and ultimately, shaped me into a more open-minded person. My participation in this organization showed me not only how to effectively lead and teach but gave me examples of what not to do as well.

Similarly, my lust for knowledge and new experiences influenced my decisions in college. Going in, I was very much undecided on what exactly I wanted to do. I knew Criminal Justice was a major I thought I would enjoy and that I could be doing good work with that degree but didnโ€™t know much else. For the beginning of my college career, I took classes in many different colleges at IU trying to figure out what minors or majors would pair well with Criminal Justice until I finally found Sociology. Learning about the world through a sociological lens sparked my interest and I never looked back. The resources and opportunities in these historic departments provided me the ability to go on and participate in undergraduate research and make strong connections to professors.

Post-graduation, I have again decided to chase experiences by participating in a year of service with City Year Greater Boston (CYGB). CYGB focuses on helping students in historically underserved communities in the Greater Boston area through tutoring and mentoring in the classroom. This experience will give me a lot of hands-on experience that I can use in the future. I am excited to give back and help students find their love of learning as much as I am excited to learn from them.
